The hospitality industry built nearly 400,000 new hotel rooms in the U.S. between 2004 and 2009, but the occupancy rate dropped from 60% to 55% last year. Decreased pricing is coming mostly from ‘penthouse suites and swanky spots’. According to Hotels.com, in the second half of 2009 travelers paid 12% less for their hotel rooms. While prices have fallen, the traditionally expensive cities have still have rooms going for a higher rate in comparison to others. These cities include New York, Honolulu, Boston, Washington and sunny Miami.
