The History Behind The Learjet

According to an article on FlyingMag.com, the original and exotically-shaped Learjet Model 23 business jet was certified 35 years ago with its notoriety coming partly from the flamboyant Bill Lear who promoted this private jet. The article goes on to describe the Learjet, stating it had a pointy nose, swept-back widescreen and a bullet-shaped tip tanks. Lear was the first to produce a business jet while other companies did so only in response to a military contract proposal. So the Learjet was more personal and earned the nickname Pocket Rocket because its takeoff and landing speeds were pretty high. With that much thrust, it could fly 41,000 feet on even the shortest flights. The original Learjet company eventually crashed financially and only about 100 models of the Learjet 23s were built. But, a financial rescue by Gates Rubber followed with the model 24, a Learjet that externally looks very much like the original. And according to the article on FlyingMag.com, all Learjet private aircrafts that followed have ‘that look’.
